Jewish leader remembers Swiss bank deal

Tuesday marks the tenth anniversary of one of the most painful episodes in recent Swiss history: the signing of a $1.25 billion settlement between Swiss banks and Holocaust survivors and their families.

The accord followed a sustained campaign by Jewish groups and the international community for compensation to be paid to victims of the Nazis who had held Swiss bank accounts. More than 50,000 dormant bank accounts possibly belonging to Holocaust victims were identified. In all around 450,000 people received compensation from the fund.
