Unsung Holocaust hero celebrates 100th
ATLANTA (AP) - The last living member of an underground network that likely helped save the lives of thousands during the Holocaust is celebrating his 100th birthday today.
Renowned architect Andre Steiner is marking the century milestone at a retirement tower north of Atlanta.
Before his architecture career, Steiner served as the muscle behind a network of work camps and series of bribes that helped stave off deportation to concentration camps for many Jews.
Steiner joined a group to help fellow Jews in Slovakia and soon became the go-to guy for the negotiations with local leaders and Nazi officials. He handed over cash installments smuggled in through contacts in Europe, America and elsewhere.
